Florida woman in jail, man dead after Alcoa bank robbery

UPDATE: Authorities on Wednesday released the identities of the man and woman accused of robbing a bank in Alcoa on Monday.

Eric David Iler, 33, of Wellington, Florida, was found dead with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound following the robbery, authorities said. Laura Ann Spencer, 39, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery.

Spencer was being held in lieu of a $60,000 bond at the Blount County jail, pending a hearing at 9 a.m. on March 15 in Blount County General Sessions Court.

A bank robbery in Blount County on Monday ended with one suspect behind bars and the other dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

The robbery was reported shortly after 2 p.m. at BB&T Bank on Associates Boulevard. Alcoa police officers responded and spoke to bank employees, who gave descriptions of a male suspect and his vehicle.

Blount County dispatchers broadcasted the vehicle description, and, a short time later, a narcotics deputy spotted it on the U.S. Highway 129 bypass, according to a news release from the Blount County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy followed the vehicle until the driver parked it in front of a residence on Regent Court. The deputy noticed the license plate had been swapped from a Tennessee to a Florida registration, the release states.

Deputies from the sheriff's office's SWAT team and agents with the Fifth Judicial District Task Force arrived at the residence, established a perimeter and evacuated the other tenants of the multi-family, three-level dwelling, according to the release.

Authorities spoke to a woman in the residence. She eventually came outside and told authorities the man inside said he was going to kill himself, according to the release.

SWAT team members entered the residence and found the man dead of a gunshot wound, the release states.

Detectives recovered a large amount of cash and a handgun.

The woman was being held Monday at the Blount County jail. Charges against her are pending.

An autopsy on the man is scheduled for Tuesday at the Knox County Regional Forensic Center. Detectives will also search the vehicle on Tuesday.
