Police arrest bank robber after manhunt in Miami Shores
Man fired his gun into ceiling of TD Bank, FBI says
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Authorities from multiple agencies tracked down a suspected bank robber Friday after a hours-long manhunt in Miami Shores, officials said.
The Miami Shore Police Department did not identify the man who was arrested.
The FBI said the armed man robbed the TD Bank just before 9:30 a.m. Friday at Northeast 90th Street and Biscayne Boulevard. Before he fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber fired a shot into the ceiling of the bank, the FBI said.
Customers were inside the bank at the time of the robbery, but no one was hurt, the FBI said.
Chilling surveillance photos lifted from video cameras inside the bank show the hooded man brandishing the hand gun at tellers and then running out as frightened bank customers and employees lay sprawled out on the floor.
Miami Shores Police and Miami-Dade County Police, along with K-9 and Aviation units, had searched for the suspect in the area of Northwest 109th Street and Northwest Miami Avenue.
Authorities did not disclose how they found the man.
“Investigators right now are going to keep that to themselves how we located him in this area," said Michael Leverock, an FBI Special Agent. "I don’t want to give up witnesses or technics but we certainly tracked him specifically to this neighborhood and specifically to a house.”
However, law enforcement officers close to the investigation told Local 10 that a GPS tracker hidden in the stolen money helped them zero in on the suspect. It is a tactic more and more banking institutions are using to catch criminals and recover stolen money.
